A compound shaft drives several pulleys, as shown. Segments (1) and (2) of the compound shaft are hollow aluminum [G = 4,000 ksi] tubes that have a polar moment of inertia of J = 2.995 in.4. Segments (3) and (4) are solid steel [G = 12,000 ksi] shafts that have a polar moment of inertia of J= 0.421 in.4. The bearings shown allow the shaft to turn freely. Assume Tg = 840 lb-ft, Tp = 575 lb-ft, TE = 180 lb-ft, L₁= 77 in., L₂ = 30.5 in., L3= 36.5 in., and L4 = 39.5 in. Calculate the rotation angle (including the correct sign) of pulley D with respect to pulley B. X E Answer: $D/B = E i (4) D (3) TB B (1) A
