A prospective client asks if your proprietary Rapid-Forge forging press can reduce some metallic material solid cylinder parts via open-die forging. The first solid cylinder part has an initial diameter of 4-in and an initial height of 2-in. The second solid cylinder part has an initial diameter of 2-in and an initial height of 1-in. Your forging press is capable of generating 50,000 lb of force. The client is trying to reduce the thickness (height) by 30% in each part. What does your analysis show? Can you reduce cylinder 1? Cylinder 2? If not, then why? Assume a coefficient of friction of 0.1. The strength coefficient (K value) of the material is 5800 psi and strain-hardening exponent (n value) is 0.17. You need to show all calculations to support your answers and explanations. (Hint: use σ = Kɛ” to determine its flow stress) (30 points)
