Q4 (a) By the aid of a sketch, show the basic terminology of thread, shank, and head of a bolt, including its thread length, grip length and nominal length. (b) A square thread power screw has a major diameter of 32 mm and a pitch of 4 mm with double threads, and it is to be used for a robotic lifting operation. The given data include f- fe= 0.08, de 40 mm, and F= 6.4 kN per screw. Determine: i) ii) (5 marks) Torque required to raise and lower the load. Efficiency during lifting the load. (5 marks) (c) As an engineer, you are assigned the task of joining a cantilever beam to a vertical channel using bolted joint as shown in Figure 4.1. A size of the vertical channel is 152 x 76 mm, with web thickness of 6.4 mm. The channel is made of hot-rolled AISI 1006 steel while the bar is made of hot-rolled AISI 1015 steel. The shoulder bolts are M10 x 1.5 ISO 5.8. Assume the bolt threads do not extend into the joint. For a design factor 1.5, determine the safe force that can be applied to the cantilever. Given yield strength for the bolt, channel and cantilever are 420 MPa, 170 MPa and 190 MPa, respectively. (15 marks)
