Question 2 A bakery requires the design and build of an industrial dough mixing machine. The machine must be able to transmit fifteen kilowatts and it was decided to use a 3-phase electric motor which has a normal running speed of 1440 r/min. The mixing machine drum is fitted with an open belt drive system. The drive is to be designed on a basis of maximum belt transmissible power. The leather belt density is 1200 kg/m³ and steel pulleys are to be used. The maximum safe working stress must not exceed 2.8 MPa. The speed of the machine pulley is to be approximately 750 r/min and the center distance of the pulleys is to be twice the larger pulley diameter. A service factor of 1.3 must be considered. Draw a neat sketch of the belt drive system and determine: Determine the design power. Determine speed ratio A Determine the angle of wrap in degrees Determine the velocity of the belt Select the correct coefficient of friction and reference the table Determine the belt dimensions i.e. with width, thickness and length Initial belt tension (Centrifugal forces must be considered) 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 2.5 2.6 2.7 (2) (2) (5) (5) (3) (15) (8) [40] Total [72]
