Question C1. The spherical gas tank is fabricated by bolting together two hemispherical shells as shown with 25mm diameter bolts. The gas tank and bolts are made from material having an allowable normal stress of 150MPa and 250MPa, respectively. If the 8m inner diameter tank is to be designed to withstand a gauge pressure of 2 MPa, determine: a. the minimum wall thickness of the tank b. whether the thin- or thick-walled analysis is valid and why? [2 marks] c. sketch a free-body diagram of one of the hemispherical shell showing the external forces [3 marks] d. the force applied on one of the hemispherical shell due to the internal pressure e. the allowable tensile force for each bolt [5 marks] Bolts [5 marks] f. the minimum number of bolts by writing the equilibrium for the sketched hemispherical shell Figure QC1 [5 marks] [5 marks]
