TIBCON has mastered the technology of manufacturing oil filled fan capacitors and has over 30 years of experience in this product. Oil-filled capacitors function over prolonged usage periods without losing capacitance value. Thus, their oil capacitors are a part of the best brands of fans sold in many countries. Recently, TIBCON has started to produce a composite capacitance with different dielectric materials to increase its performance. For such a case, one of its engineers has investigated the performance of the capacitor that is partially immersed by oil. Specifically, Figure 2 shows two co-axial cylindrical shells with a same length of c. The radius p of the inner and outer cylindrical shells is given by a and b. The aim of the engineer is to investigate the effectiveness of capacitance filled with different dielectric materials. (a) As one of the trainees at TIBCON, your task is to help the engineer to find the ratio change of capacitance before and after the capacitor is immersed into the oil with a depth of 8 cm (see Figure 2(b)). Given that the capacitor length is c = 10 cm, the electrical relative permittivity of the oil is & = 4 and the relative permittivity outside the oil is & = 1. (b) If the specification is to obtain the oil-filled capacitance value three times greater than the oil free capacitance value (capacitor with free space material), find the new depth for the oil-filled capacitor to be immersed in the oil.
