3. Optical Fiber Modes Given a step-index fiber with the following characteristics: n₁ = 1.47,4 = 0.001, and core radius, a = 8 μm. a) Calculate the numerical aperture (NA) and the fiber acceptance angle, 0₁. b) Calculate the mode cutoff wavelength. c) The fiber operates in single mode for which of the following wavelengths: 850 nm, 1310 nm and 1550 nm. (Explain your answer) d) If the cladding layer is removed from the fiber, the core would be surrounded by air. Calculate the NA for this case. e) f) For the cladding-less case described in d), calculate the number of modes that propagate in the fiber for a wavelength value of 1550 nm. The number of modes is given by N = 12/2 for values of V> 10. Explain how the removal of the cladding layer impacts fiber performance in two ways.
