The end gates of the lock are 8 m high and 10 m wide, when
closed include an angle of 120°. Each gate is carried on two hinges
placed at the top and the bottom of the gate. If the water levels
are 6 m and 3 m on the upstream and downstream sides respectively.
a) Describe the problem and carry out the force analysis due to
water pressure and determine the load on the hinges.
b) Determine the weight that can be supported at the ram
(diameter 50 cm)., if a steady effort P of 300N is applied at the
plunger (diameter 5 cm).
c) The Pressure at the ground of observation deck was 760 mmHg
and at the top was 754mmHg as recorded by the barometer. Assume the
density of mercury as 13600 kg/m3 and that of air as 1.18 kg/m3 .
Determine the height of the observation deck from ground. Explain
to the Intern on the accuracy of the calculated height. He may ask
to use a Manometer instead, explain him what are the limitations in
your measurement using a manometer. Request the intern to write a
detailed report on his learning from this part of the task.
