Problem 1: An actual steam power plant operates on a conventional Rankine cycle with the following data: Pump inlet and exit pressures are 9kPa and 16.1 MPa, respectively; inlet and exit temperatures are 36°C and 35°C; isentropic pump efficiency is 0.86. • Boiler inlet pressure and temperature are 16 MPa, and 36°C, respectively; Boiler exit pressure and temperature are 15.2 MPa and 630°C, respectively. • Turbine inlet pressure and temperature are 15 MPa and 605 °C, respectively; Turbine exit pressure is 15 kPa: Isentropic Turbine efficiency is 0.9. (a) Draw the plant schematic diagram showing the components and the parameters values (b) Draw the Rankine Cycle on T-S diagram (c) Calculate the thermal efficiency of the cycle (d) Calculate the plant net power output for a mass flow rate of 20 kg/s Problem 2: For the Steam power plant described in Problem 1, list all possible techniques that can be implemented to increase the thermal efficiency of the plant. Briefly provide explanation of each technique and the range of improvements in % that each technique can achieve.
