1.15 A machine shaft turning at 600 r/min is supported in bearings 760 mm apart; 15 kW is supplied to the shaft through a 460 mm diameter pulley located 250 mm to the right of the right-hand bearing. The power is transmitted from the shaft through a 200 mm spur gear located 250 mm to the right-hand side of the left-hand bearing. The belt drive is at an angle of 60° above the horizontal and to the right. The pulley weighs 890 N, to provide some fly. wheel effect. The ratio of belt tensions is 3:1. The gear has a 20% tooth form and mates with another gear located directly above the shaft. If the shaft material has an ulti- mate strength of 483 MPa, find the shaft diameter using a factor of safety of 6 and neglecting shock and fatigue fac tors.
