Mr. Marshall has a history of chronic tinea pedis, which he usually treats with OTC medications. When he awoke yesterday, his left foot was erythematous, hot, and tender. He applied an OTC antifungal cream hoping that would improve his condition. However, today he presented at the clinic complaining of throbbing pain in his foot. The Sx of inflammation have worsened, including increased erythema and edema of the foot and lower leg. After completing a PE, the physician made a diagnosis of cellulitis and admitted Mr. Marshall to the hospital for IV antibiotic Tx Cellulitis is an infection of the skin, usually caused by streptococcal or staphylococcal bacteria entering through a break in the skin. Common symptoms include erythema, heat, edema, and tenderness. Treatment for mild cases is oral antibiotics. Severe cases usually require IV antibiotic therapy, Surgical debridement, medical removal of dead tissue, may also be necessary.
