Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is a pesticide that wasused in the battle to fight malaria. It was effective in killingthe vector for malaria, the Anopheles mosquito. However, it's ability to bioaccumulate in the environment and itsinability to degrade quickly caused environmental concerns and itsuse was discontinued in 1972 in the U.S. The U.S. is currently nowfree from endemic malaria which is thought to be in part due to theDDT campaign, however many other countries still suffer from thisdevastating disease. Should DDT be used in these countries tocontrol malaria? Weigh the environmental impact with the impact thepesticide would have on disease transmission. Support your opinionwith academic sources.
