A student was given a test tube containing a white solid which may have contained Ag, Pb or Hg. The student added hot water to the test tube, heated it and then decanted the water into a second tube, retaining the solid. After adding a solution of 0.1 M K2CrO4 to the hot water, a yellow precipitate was formed. Then ammonia was added to the original solid which produced a grey precipitate.
