Equipment and Materials: PPE, Epoxy Resin, Hardener, Carbon Fibre Woven Fabric, Rollers and Brushes, Mouid, Tensile Test machine. Manufacture of Test Plates 1. Review the COSH/Risk Assessment sheet and sign the accompanying document to confirm that you have read and fully understood the risks and any mitigations 2. Apply PPE supplied (glasses, mask, apron & gloves). 3. Prepare the mould supplied, using the release wax supplied. Apply the wax sparingly over 150mm * 300mm area with a paper towel and polish with a clean towel and then repeat Figure 1- Resin, hardener and release wex. 4. Measure and cut the reinforcement materials to the required size using scissors. (280mm x 100mm) 4 sheets. Ensure that you use the correct materials Figure 2. Carbon Fibre fabric roll Figure 3-Cut plies 5. Weigh out sufficient quantities of resin (50g) and hardener (15g) into the mining cup. Mix thoroughly but do not entrap air bubbles in the mix. Remember the resin has a Gel Time and Pot Life Figure 4-Weighing Resin and Hardener 6. Immediately brush a layer of resin onto the mould surface gel coat) and then add a layer of reinforcement. Use the brush, stipple in some more resin until the reinforcement is fully wetted. Use the laminated rollers to remove any entrapped air. Figure 5. Finished laminate 7. Repeat this process until four layers of reinforcement have been added and then leave to cure at room temperature. 1. Review the Risk Assessment sheet and sign the accompanying document to confirm that you have read and fully understood the risks and mitigations. 2. The samples will be removed from the mould and machined to the size according to BS EN ISO 527. The technical staff will do this for you. 3. Ensure that you are familiar with BS EN ISO 527 prior to testing the samples. Available from UWS library at no cost. 4. Measure and record the sizes of the samples. 5. Place the specimen in the grips. Zero the test machine and apply the load till failure. Note the crosshead speed and ambient conditions. Save the test data for analysis. Note failure mode. Ensure that you obtain all test data from the session. (Photograph the failed specimens.) ii. Utilising BS EN ISO 527 present the test results and from the work undertaken previously discuss the failure of the specimens.
