Generation of High Voltage Impulse An impulse voltage generator is designed to produce impulse voltages that simulate lightning strikes and switching surges. The generator system consists of a charging rectifier, impulse stages according to the Marx circuit, an impulse voltage divider, and impulse voltage measurement system. These over-voltages cause transient stresses to the insulations, much higher than the stresses due to the operational voltages. Therefore, insulations must be designed to withstand lightning and switching over-voltages. The insulation design must be verified by withstanding testing using lightning and switching tests respectively. Since an impulse voltage can severely damage electrical equipment, it is important to test HV equipment to work against the impulse voltage. Therefore, an Impulse Voltage generator that generates high voltage or current surges in a controlled testing set-up as shown in Figure can be utilized. Vo C R C Vio R. V.
