Produce a short text-based explanation of the server design.
Please refer to the below mini-case for contextual information.
A small new entrepreneurial company with 8 employees, started by
four former SDSU students, has acquired space in an old small
office building on 4950 Waring Rd. in San Diego. Their business
started in a garage of one of the founders, but it has now grown so
much that they need a larger and dedicated space for their
business.
TEAMSTERS purchase designer clothes – sourced directly from
overseas producers – and then print and engrave the clothing with
school or company names by themselves. For certain assignment where
special equipment is necessary, they contracts out certain jobs to
other US based units. They sell the clothes in bulk to school
stores, sports clubs, and companies via their website and via
direct sales/marketing efforts towards potential customers.
Technology
In terms of devices, they all have desktops available on premise
(14 computers: 12 x PC/Windows and 2 X MACs dedicated to graphical
design work), laptops for remote work (8 computers: 4 PCs + 4
MACs), smart phones and most also have a tablet. They also own
a couple of standard printers and document scanners for
administrative use with both Wi-Fi, LAN, USB
and Bluetooth capabilities. They have a couple of
printing and engraving machines with LAN cable ports and screens
and keyboard to operate them. In the office there is also
a set of new docking stations for laptops with screens,
keyboard and mouse attached so employees can hook up their laptops
in the office. Right inside the entrance besides the
reception there is a large wall size wide
screen monitor/TV which is to be used for running TV
channels, commercial videos, PowerPoint presentations,
and other branded graphics in the reception. The wide
screen monitor needs to be connected to and controlled by
a desktop computer which also has a screen, keyboard, and
mouse. That desktop computer is used by the receptionist.
They have a couple of old servers with some older shared
Microsoft-based software like SharePoint, Office 2013, SQL etc.
There servers are used to store and share company documents
(SharePoint), handle emails, run their accounting and
invoicing needs (Microsoft Axapta) and CRM system
(Salesforce.com), store customer designs/graphics, etc. They also
have a couple of external hard drives with data on them, an old
webserver where their website is located, and an old server
dedicated to backing up their entire system.
Server Needs
They have now decided that the time has come to upgrade their
server setup and build one new dedicated server from the ground up
which they can have on-location in their office space, and which
can handle all their needs. To do so they have asked you for help
to design and build the new server. Once the new server is build,
they plan to do a slow transition from the old to the new server
setup during the first 6 month in the new location.
Network Setup
They also need to build a
new Communications Network from
the ground up for the company that can handle all their needs. To
do so they have asked you for help.
