1.2 A company was having serious problems with a powder storage hopper. The hopper discharged to a screw ſeeder at an erratic and variable low rate, periodically was blocked at the outlet and was difficult to restart. You made an investigation on the hopper and decided to commission shear cell tests on the powder. Based on the new shear cell test data (shown in Fig. 1) and results obtained from careful calculations, you identified the problems and recommended some modifications to the hopper that solved the problem. Write a brief report to the management in which you address the following: The problem with the hopper that you found in your investigation b) Your recommended modifications to the hopper. c) The rates of discharge before and after the modifications. Attach with your report all necessary calculations to support your findings Existing design: Data: Material of wall: mild steel Shear cell test data: see Fig. Semi-included angle of conical hopper: 36° Angle of wall friction: 170 Outlet: circular with diameter =0.35 m Bulk density of powder: 1200 kg/m Average particle diameter: 1.5 mm Approx.ans.
