Changes are inevitable and happen continuously around us, and it
is the same for health care. If we look back where health care is
coming from to today's health care, changes have been constant.
Health care went from a system of home remedies, and itinerant
doctors with little training to a complex, scientific,
technological, and bureaucratic system often called the
"medical-industrial complex. With all the latter changes, let us
not forget patients' affordability and how much is spent on health
care over time. The assessing process is to identify unmet health
and health care needs of a population and make changes to meet
those unmet needs. The assessment process to determine if the
change is needed could start with the community identifying their
health needs. Many organizations conduct Community Health Need
Assessment (CHNA). Still, for Critical Access Hospital (CAH) to
gain or maintain accreditation, they need to perform a Community
Health Assessment every five years. The assessment process has many
methods but generally includes stakeholder meetings, community
focus groups, surveys, interviews with community leaders and
population health, and other health-related data (What is a
community health needs assessment? n.d.). Covid-19 is a perfect
example of change in the health care environment. The covid-19
pandemic caused a vast amount of stress on worldwide health care.
Some of the assessment processes used during the height of the
covid-19 pandemic were prioritizing and risk factors. For example,
some people may be more likely to have severe illnesses than others
because they have characteristics or medical conditions that
increase their risk (Assessing Risk Factors for Severe COVID-19
Illness, 2020). Therefore, surgeries were prioritized based on
their urgency and the patients' chances.
