This scenario is based on the simulated organisation Little.ly (long URL: www.littlely.eduworks.com.au).
This week, a three-year-old child has commenced attending the Little.ly Early Learning Centre in the Chestnut Oak space. After relocating to Australia from China one month ago, the child and family are finding the transition to the Little.ly community rather challenging.
In the home environment, the child’s family speak Chinese, specifically Mandarin as a first language. As this child attends the new centre, the introduction to a second language (English) is being communicated, which the child has no knowledge of at all.
You are the lead educator in the Chestnut Oak space. The Director of Little.ly has asked you to work with the child, family, and the other educators in the service to ensure the child is included and feels well supported at Little.ly.
Communication barriers need to be addressed and supported by the team in a culturally safe way, including strategies to support the child’s language and interpretations.
