Group Policy Critique Presentation Objective: This assignment
provides the students with opportunity to research and explore a
foundational understanding of the different types of public policy
in Canada. In addition, the assignment provides the capacity for
student to think critically and communicate effectively – in
presentation and oral skills. Policy is defined as: The principles
that govern action (mandates or constrains) directed towards given
ends Public policies include: health policy, nursing policy,
institutional policy, and organizational policy. Each type of
policy is shaped by politics and power. Health policy is concerned
with the goals and directions for supporting and promoting public
health (e.g. patient safety policies, policy that prohibits tobacco
or alcohol use in the workplace, no plastic bottle water purchase
option in the workplace, etc.). Nursing policy may be part of
public policy, organizational, and/or institutional policy (e.g.
Best Practice Guidelines, clinical pathways) Organizational policy
are the rules governing associations - nursing (e.g. RN role
competencies, health professions act, scope of practice regulation)
Institutional policies are those rules governing workplaces such as
hospitals. (e.g. policies around authority and accountability,
mission and vision statement). Instructions: 1. Check Teams on
Blackboard and connect with your colleagues via email, Collaborate,
or other internet tools for communications. 2. Use reputable
websites / resources such as the WHO, CNA (Canadian Nurses
Association) and Niagara College Library, or other access to
research about a particular public policy in Canada. 3. Draft a
Power Point presentation (10 minutes) that includes the following
items: - The type of policy selected - The purpose or intent of the
policy - Offer 2 nursing or healthcare service implications
regarding the selected policy - The different issues surrounding
the policy - What are some of the possible strategies your team
identified to resolve some of the issues? On the day of the
presentation: 1. One team rep per team will submit a copy of the
power point with all team members FIRST AND LAST NAMES arranged in
alphabetical order, as well as STUDENT ID NUMBERS on the first
slide. 2. The following rubric will be used for the presentation.
