The concentration of the synthetic opioid fentanyl should be determined in a blood plasma sample from a person who has taken an overdose. Outline how to proceed to analyze fentanyl in the plasma sample: Extraction and purification, concentration and analysis (chromatographic technique, column, detector, mobile phase etc.). Fentanyl is approx. 100 times stronger than morphine. Pure fentanyl is a solid with a melting point of 87.5°C. The molecular formula is C22H28N20. The compound is sparingly water soluble (0.024 g/L) with LogP = 3.9. The compound is further weakly basic with a pka value equal to 8.77 (the amino group).
