1. Water at 212 °F is pumped from Tank 1 (at 35 psig) to Tank 2 (40 psig) as shown in Figure 1. The required flow rate is 200 gpm. The total head losses between Tank 1 and Tank 2 at this flow rate is estimated to be 30 ft of water. Answer questions (a)-(d) based on these information. (a) (15 pts.) Plot the system characteristic curve on the pump curves provided in Figure 2. Is this pump suitable for the pipe flow system if the desired flow rate is 200 gpm? If so, which impeller size would you select? Explain. (b) (5 pts.) What can we expect to happen in the pipe flow system if we use this centrifugal pump with a 11.0 in pump (impeller diameter) for this pipe flow system. (Hint: show on Figure 2).
(c) (5 pts.) If the pump is now running at 1160 rpm and has a flow rate of 200 gpm (with fixed geometry), what happens to the flow rate and the total head losses if the pump speed is suddenly changed from 1160 rpm to 2000 rpm? (d) (10 pts.) Assuming diameter of Tank 2 in Figure 1 is 5 ft, and the air volume above the water in Tank 2 is 50 ft), estimate the rate at which the volume changes in Tank 2 in cfm at this instance of time when the liquid flow rate is 200 gpm from Tank 1 to Tank 2.
