3) "Wind Turbines of Texas" 1200 kg 30 m 30 m 30 m Som A 1000 kg 1000 kg kc Fig. (a) Fig. (b) Fig. (C) Rotating unbalance is an important concern for large-scale wind turbines such as the ones shown in Fig. (a). The tower section might subject to vertical vibrations if there is severe rotating unbalance on the turbine blades. The tower section is therefore mounted on an elastic support, which could be modeled by a spring and damper as shown in Fig. (b). A simplified model of the same turbine is depicted in Fig. (C). ✓ Although the blades are 50 m long as shown in Fig. (b), the mass centers of each turbine blade is located 30 m from the hub O as shown in the simplified drawing in Fig. (C). ✓ The masses of the turbine blades, A, B, and Care 1000, 1200, and 1000 kg, respectively. The spring stiffness of the elastic foundation is k = 12800 N/m. ✓ The rotational speed of the turbine is typically around w = 1 rad/s. on average. Design the damping coefficient c so that the amplitude of the vibrations does not exceed 2 cm. Hint: Substitute X = 0.02 m, solve for the magnification factor, M, find the T, then relate it to c.
