A family is currently dealing with the unfortunate demise of
their washing machine. They are considering two alternatives. The
first is a top-loading unit that costs $500. The machine uses 40
gallons of water and 2 kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity per
load. It´s a large family with kids involved in basketball and
ballet, so they expect to do eight loads of laundry per week. The
second option is a front-loading unit that costs $1000. However, it
can wash double the amount of clothes per load (meaning 4 loads per
week), while also using half the water and electricity for each
load in comparison to the top-loading unit. Assume that electricity
costs $0.08/kWh and water costs $2/1000 gal. For those scoring at
home, there are 52 weeks in a year.
a.) Develop a table that tracks the cumulative costs (capital +
energy) over ten years for both machines. Which machine should be
chosen if considering only cost?
b.) In which year are the cumulative costs approximately the
same? (This year would represent a breakeven point of sorts between
the two options.)
c.) Provide examples of two other variables that may influence
your decision not mentioned in this analysis.
d.) Do your answers change in parts a.) and b.) if the discount
rate is 6%?
