Question 5 (20 marks) A 45° off-axis tensile test is conducted on a generally orthotropic test specimen by applying a normal stress or as shown below. The specimen has strain gages attached so as to measure the normal strains er and Ey along the x and y directions, respectively. & y (a) Express the following engineering constants for this material, Ex , Vay , Y12 , and G12, in terms of the measured parameters Ox, ex, and £y. (b) In addition to the two existing strain gages, a third gage is mounted at 0 = 45° so as to measure the normal strain £j. If the applied stress Ox = 100 MPa and the measured strains are Ex = 0.00647, εy = -0.00324, and εj = 0.00809, determine the off-axis modulus of elasticity Ex, the off-axis major Poisson's ratio Vxy, and the shear-coupling ratio Nx.xy. 45° off-axis tensile test specimen у kon- Ox O 45 x Strain gage Strain gage for measuring Ey for measuring ex
