In his senior year as a collegiate football player, Jerome
played tight end in the third game of the season. He was running
downfield, and as he reached overhead to catch a pass that was
almost out of reach, Jerome was tackled on the left side of his
torso. He fell to the ground but was able to walk off the field,
hunched over and holding his left upper abdominal area. As he
approached the bench, he sat down. Although he described minimal
discomfort to the team’s medical staff, he did report a warm,
oozing feeling in his abdomen. As the medical personnel assessed
his vital signs, they found a rapid pulse, low BP, rapid breathing,
paleness, cool skin, and anxiety.
