a A US company has been sequencing the DNA of 20 individuals. With the individuals' consent, the results will be made available to researchers. Each donor will be offered information about genetic variations that might indicate a higher-than-average likelihood of developing a life-threatening condition. There are hopes that genetic screenings of large populations will change the practice of health care from a focus on treating diseases to preventing them. Some researchers predict the com- plete sequencing of each human genome will provide routine data to health care providers, much like the common measure- ments of blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and blood counts today. Other research data show, however, that better predictors of determining the risk of diabetes are asking people about their family history of diabetes, their weight, and their age rather than sequencing their DNA. Reflective Questions: Apply different concepts and theories of ethics in thinking about the following questions. • What are some of the ethical issues of these DNA analyses? • What are the responsibilities of health care professionals in the genetic screenings of a population? . What additional components could a community health nurse add to the following plan of care for participants having their DNA sequenced?
