The thickness of a plastic film (in mils) on a substrate material is thought to be influenced by the temperature at which the coating is applied. A completely randomized experiment is carried out. Eleven substrates are coated at 50°C, resulting in a sample mean coating thickness of Xi = 103.4 and a sample standard deviation of S; = 17.8. Another 15 substrates are coated at 65°C, for which X2 =99.6 and S: = 19.1 are observed. It was originally suspected that ruising the process temperature would change mean coating thickness. Do the data support this claim assuming equal variances? Use a=0.01. a. State the hypotheses. t. Find the critical value(s), identify the rejection region and show on a graph. c. What is the test statistic? Show on the graph. d. What is the decision? e. Interpret the decision in the context of coating thickness.
