CONCEPTUAL CORNERSTONES: DEVELOPMENT Short Answer Question A family comes into the pediatric emergency department with a young child suffering from severe respiratory distress and high fever. The child is 3 years old but appears to be very small and thin for the stated age. The family has two other children and is accompanied by an older gentleman in a wheelchair. The family states that they just recently immigrated to the United States and currently have no source of income. They are staying in a small room of a cousin's apartment. The other children are ages 5 and 7. The family has no insurance and expressed grave concern about finances and their ability to pay for any prescriptions or copayments that may be required to secure care for their ill child. The child has a fever of 102 3°F is tachypnic at 44 breaths per minute, has mild to poor skin turgor, and has not voided in many hours. There is a history of asthma in the family, but this child has no history of reactive airway disease and no previous experiences of respira tory distress.
