The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 is to date the deadliest natural
disaster ever to strike the United States. Given the tools
and knowledge the U.S. Weather Service had in 1900, could the
Galveston disaster have been prevented? If the hurricane had
not hit Galveston, would it have become the "New York of the Gulf
Coast?" What has been put in place since 1900 to prevent an
additional tragedy?
