1. You receive an order for a baby for Dextrose 12.5% IV
infusion @ 4.3 ml/hr.
You are going to make a 500 ml bag (it’s a common size,
even though it is much more than they need for 24
hrs).
The Abacus pump (also used to make TPNs) will be used to
make the bag.
It will use sterile water and dextrose 70% and pump
these into an empty IV bag. How much of each fluid will be needed?
(Hint: this is an allegation)
2. Rats! The Abacus pump is not working. The technician
will have to make the bag by hand. What they have to work with:
Premade Dextrose 10% 500 ml IV bag, Dextrose 50% (in
vials).
How many ml’s of each solution will be needed? Hint: you
need to remove ___ ml from the D10 bag
first.
3. Acyclovir 1,200 mg IV q8h is ordered for a patient
with suspected herpes encephalitis. Patient parameters: Male,
height = 5’8, total body weight = 120 kg, normal renal function. Is
this dose correct? If not, what should it be (round to the nearest
10 mg)?
4. You receive an order to start oral amiodarone on a
patient. The patient has a documented anaphylactic reaction to
Gastrografin contrast. What do you do?
5 . Propofol IV infusion 10 mg/ml is ordered at a dose
of 5-60 mcg/kg/min. Patient weighs 85 kg. What is this dose in mL
per hour?
