According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 41% of college students nationwide engage in “binge drinking” behavior, having 5 or more drinks in one occasion during the past two weeks. A college president wonders if the proportion of students enrolled at her college that binge drink is actually lower than the national proportion. In a commissioned study, 348 students are selected randomly from a list of all students enrolled at the college. Of these, 132 admitted to having engaged in binge drinking. Based on the results of the test, a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of all students at this college that engage in binge drinking is 0.338 to 0.423 0.343 to 0.418 0.328 to 0.430 0.341 to 0.420
A bottling plant produces 1 liter bottles of soda. The actual distribution of volumes of soda dispensed to bottles is Normal, with mean u and standard deviation o = 0.05 liter. We randomly select 6 bottles and measure the volume of soda in each. The results of these 6 measurements (in liter units) are 0 0.99. 1.05 1.04 1.01 1.06 0.94 Based on these data, a 90% confidence interval for u is 0.933 liters to 1.097 liters. 0.917 liters to 1.113 liters. 0.975 liters to 1.055 liters 0.981 liters to 1.049 liters
