A Unpolarised Light Of Intensity I Is Incident Sequentially On Two Sheets Of Ideal Polaroid Sheets 1 And 2 The Axis 1 (100.13 KiB) Viewed 94 times
(a) Unpolarised light of intensity I is incident sequentially on two sheets of ideal polaroid (Sheets 1 and 2). The axis of maximum transmission of both sheets are vertical - Le. at 0°. Carefully describe the (i) intensity I, and (ii) the state of polarisation of the light emerging from Sheet 2. Justify your answers. (b) A third sheet of ideal polaroid (Sheet 3) is inserted between the other two sheets with its axis of maximum transmission at an angle to the vertical. Carefully describe the changes in (i) intensity I, and (ii) the state of polarisation of the light emerging from the set of polaroids (i.e. emerging from Sheet 2) as 8 varies from 0 to 180°. Justify your answers. (c) The image below shows the view of printed text on a page seen through a crystal of calcite. WILL TELL Calgilint refractiona (i) Briefly explain why there is a 'double image' of the text. (ii) Explain how and why the view of the printed page changes if you rotate the calcite relative to the page? (10 marks)
