"When distinguishing between assimilation and pluralism one must look at both the advantages and disadvantages of both concepts. Assimilation is when an individual takes on aspects of the dominant culture, and often loses aspects of their original or culture of birth. An example being many of the Native American tribes only speaking English, and losing touch with their native language. Which in turn has caused many of the tribal or Native American languages to become dead languages. Pluralism allows individuals to keep aspects of their own culture (Leon-Guerrero, 2018, p.57). An example being the Hispanic community still practicing Quinceaneras with the youth when they turn 15. I believe that most individuals in the United States like to believe that they are for pluralism, however; overall society often encourages those to assimilate. I originally was born and raised in Spain, but when I moved to the states when I was 5 years old I was enrolled in ESL classes and forced to speak English. Like I've said before my Abuelita raised me, so when I came to the states to live with family members no one around me knew Spanish and so I was forced to speak English. I was highly encouraged to assimilate to the "American" cultural norms and was expected to "move forward" in my life. Now I look at my son taking Spanish, and sometimes wish that I was able to maintain some of my heritage. I try to encourage my children to practice some of the life lessons and values that my Abuelita taught me. LEON-GUERRERO, A. N. N. A. Y. (2022).
