Question 14 (10 points) Read the following case study and answer the questions that follow. In January of 2006, an American state worker in Nevada saw what she thought was a young girl pushing a shopping cart down the middle of the street. Thinking something might be wrong, she phoned the police. Police investigations revealed that the girl was actually a 16-year-old. The girl said that she and her 11-year-old brother had been confined to a bathroom in their family's apartment day and night for 5 years, and she had just escaped. The teenage girl accused her grandmother of beating her with a stick and withholding food from her and her brother if they were caught trying to communicate with one another. She reported that she slept on the bathroom floor and her brother slept in a cabinet under the sink. These claims were supported by evidence gathered from the family's apartment. The police discovered that the teenage girl had not been enrolled in school for five years and that her brother had never been enrolled in school. 1. In what ways were the conditions the girl and boy lived under similar to the isolates discussed in class and in what ways were they different? (4 marks) 2. By referencing the stories of Genie, and/or Dani, how might this kind of upbringing affect the teenage girl and her younger brother? (3 marks) 3. Imagine you are part of Children's Aid and you have just rescued these children. Based on what you have learned about resocialization, what methods would you recommend to help the teenage girl and her younger brother? (3 marks)
