Instructions
You will be instructed to complete a simple demonstration –
follow the procedure below and answer the questions in the lab. It
is suggested you print this sheet and respond to the questions
here. Please upload a SINGLE file to the course site with your
answers. You should only submit page 3 & 4 of this
document.
Objectives:
3.1 Explain the processes cells use to store chemical energy and
how that energy is used to mediate chemical, transport, and
mechanical work in the cell
3.2 - Describe the location, anatomic features, and function of
each portion of the alimentary canal.
3.4 - Identify the function and regulation of enzymes secreted
by the digestive organs and glands
3.6 List the major sources and cellular uses of carbohydrates,
lipids and proteins
3.8 Explain the factors that affect an individual’s
energy requirements
Materials:
PROCEDURE
Part 1
The first thing we need to do is to prepare your gelatin
according to instructions on your brand. You should make a
total of 2 cups of dissolved gelatin in water. Portion ½
cup portions into each of your four bowls and place in refrigerator
to set.
Pause: Complete Lab Questions to Part 1
While your gelatin sets let’s talk a little bit about the
importance of the digestive system. The first concept that is
important to understand is cellular respiration. Take a
moment to review cellular respiration, then answer the questions at
the end of this lab document.
Part 2
Once your gelatin has set completely, label your four bowls “A”,
“B”, “C”, and “D”. Set “A” aside. Use a butter
knife to cut the gelatin in “B” into ½ inch sections (leave in
bowl). Sprinkle one teaspoon of meat tenderizer onto
“C”. Finally, cut “D” into ½ inch sections (leave in
bowl), then sprinkle one teaspoon of meat tenderizer onto the
surface. In summary, your four bowls of gelatin should be as
follows:
A – unmodified
B – cut
C – meat tenderizer added
D – cut, with meat tenderizer added
Pause: Complete Lab Questions to Part 2
Answer the questions at the end of this lab
document.

Part 1 Questions
(circle correct answer for multiple choice)
(1pt) ATP is important to cellular processes because
it
A. is formed by muscles contracting or whenever cellular
work occurs.
B. provides energy for cellular work when the terminal,
high-energy bond is broken.
C. releases oxygen when high-energy phosphate bonds are
broken.
D. is a by-product of all catabolic reactions.
(1pt) What is the function of ATP molecules in living
cells?
A. They form a genetic material.
B. They capture energy from the
oxidation of fuels in their high-energy phosphate bonds, and the
energy is used in various cell processes.
C. They act as coenzymes so that fats can be
synthesized.
D. They are an integral part of the cell membrane,
important in transporting water molecules.
(1pt) Which of the following is the cell’s preferred molecule to
use for the process of glycolysis?
Now take a few minutes to review the reading in chapter 18, then
respond to the following question:
(4 pts) Imagine that an individual is unable to produce
the following enzymes. For each enzyme, indicate what
macromolecule digestion would be negatively affected for, and what
a resulting deficit within cellular function might be seen.
Maltase
Pepsin
Pancreatic lipase
Trypsin
Finally, think about the processes within the body that make up
“metabolism”. Identify three factors that will (in general)
cause a person to have a lower BMR. (3pts)
Part 2 Questions
Allow the bowls of gelatin to sit, untouched, for thirty
minutes. Using the measuring cup, estimate the amount of
gelatin that has liquefied in each bowl. Enter those values
below (2pts).
“A”
“B”
“C”
“D”
Briefly (3 sentences) relate your observations from this
demonstration to the process of digestion. What functions of the
digestive system does this exercise demonstrate? How does that
process relate to the metabolic work within cells of the body?
(3pts)
Which organ(s) is/are responsible for the process modeled by
bowl “B”? Answer all that apply (1pt)
Which organ(s) is/are responsible for the process modeled by
bowl “C”? Answer all that apply (1pt) – please note – the
main ingredient in gelatin is collagen.
If this process were repeated with bowls of lipid, what organ(s)
would be responsible for producing the secretions that aid in
chemical digestion? Answer all that apply (1pt)
Instructions You will be instructed to complete a simple demonstration – follow the procedure below and answer the quest
