Problem 3: (10 marks) We consider the Michelson interferometer. 1) What is the physical meaning of the time delay T? 2) Recall the expression of the fluence Sig(r) in terms of the degree of coherence function y(T). 3) We define the fringe visibility V(7) as V(T) = max [Sig(7)] - min [Sig(7)] max [Sig(7)] + min [Sig(7)] (2) with max [Sig(7)] and min [Sig(7)] denoting the maximum and the minimum value of Sig(r). If we assume that y(7) is such that its modulus |y(7)| varies slowly as compared to its phase (i.e. its complex argument), show that V(T) = |Y(T)|. (3)
