In the presence of a magnetic field, some dielectric materials are birefringent (that is, they have two refractive indices). These are called gyrotropic materials, and they are characterized by the permittivity and the radius of gyration g through the constitutive relation (assuming that the medium is nonmagnetic μ = 1 and nonconductive a = 0): D = EE + gx E Consider the propagation of a plane electromagnetic wave in a gyrotropic medium. Suppose that it propagates in the z direction, and that g = gêz. (a) Starting from Maxwell's equations, show that the wave is transverse (that is, that E₂ = 0), and obtain the possible values for the refractive index n = kc/w, where k is the wave vector. (b) For each value of the refractive index, determine the state of polarization of the wave.
