CSI-Abbotsford Police were summoned at midnight to a grizzly murder scene where they found the body of Eddie the Weasel, a notorious criminal with reputed underworld connections. Upon arrival, officers noted that the air temperature was a mild 68°F and the body temperature was 85°F. At 2:00 A.M., after fingerprints had been taken and suspects questioned, the body had further cooled to 74°F. Acting on a tip, the police arrest Clare Voyant, Eddie's visionary girlfriend. Clare had spent the evening at Louie's Bar, drinking a bit too much and threatening Eddies' life. She stormed out at 11:15P.M. in a foul mood. It looked like an open-and-shut case. Fortunately, Clare knew natural logarithms. She also knew Newton's law of cooling, a cornerstone of the theory of heat dissipation. Newton's law says that the rate at which an object cools is proportional to the difference between the object's temperature and the temperature of its surroundings. In everyday language this means that when an object is much hotter than the outside air, its rate of cooling is high, so it cools down very fast, when a body is just a little hotter than its surroundings, its rate of cooling is low and it cools slowly. Newton's law applies to anything that is cooling off, be it a hot potato just out of the oven or a lifeless corpse lying on the sidewalk. A living person is not cooling off. Human metabolism insures that body temperature is maintained at or about 98.6°F. But a nonliving person ceases to generate heat and thus cools, potato-like, according to Newton's law. Upon translating the verbal description above into a concise mathematical formula and applying calculus, Clare derived the following equation for T, the temperature of the body t hours after midnight. Your assignment is to solve this case. 1) Use Newton's Law of Cooling T(t) = A + (T-A)ekt to find Clare's formula 2) Use your formula from #1 to verify the known evidence i.e. body temperature at midnight and at 2 am 3) Now work backwards to find the time that Eddy died.. 4) Is Clare guilty?
