The tidal range varies between 6.8 m (spring) and 2.5
m (neap), and the tidal stream velocity at this point is
2.3m/s. The tidal limit of the Ribble is 18 km inland at
Preston. The width of the River Ribble at the proposed
location is 1.5 km (at high tide) and the depth is 3 m (at low
tide).
a) Sketch the spring and neap tidal range as a function
of time for a 24 hr period.
b) A technology under consideration at the
proposed location, is the Marine Current Turbine, a tidal
stream device which has 2 turbines each of radius 12m.
Estimate the energy generation potential of the site, assuming
a coefficient of performance Cp of 0.4, and density of
water ρ of 1000kg/m3 and that this device works all year
round.
c) Alternatively, the site could be the location for a
tidal barrage. Approximating the area behind the barrage as
a triangle, what is the average power output during a
spring tide?
d) Aside from the power/energy output, describe
two advantages that the tidal barrage investment might
have compared to the tidal stream option.
The River Ribble flows into the sea just south of Blackpool and West of Preston in Northern England. The Government is considering generating electricity from the tidal resource at the mouth of the River Ribble, as shown in Figure Q2.
