In a Monsanto process, cis-[Rh(CO)212] catalyst is used in methanol conversion to acetic acid with propionic acid as the major liquid by-product. Propose the reaction mechanism for formation of propionic acid by-product in Monsanto process. Your answer should clearly indicate the IUPAC nomenclature of the catalyst, the characteristics of the rhodium catalyst, namely, coordination number, charge and number of d electron(s) and total number of electrons around the central metal ion. Propose with justification an alternative catalyst formulation which could minimize the production of propionic acid by-product during the production of acetic acid from methanol. [50 marks]
