Genomic evidence shows that Homo sapiens contains DNA from
Neanderthals. If they interbred with Homo sapiens, why aren't
Neanderthals considered to be members of the same species as Homo
sapiens? Interbreeding happened only once between these species.
The hybrids were usually sterile so the species are considered
separate. Neanderthals and Homo sapiens maintained their
morphological identities despite interbreeding Neanderthals and
Homo sapiens maintained their cultural identities despite
interbreeding. Not enough time had elapsed for post-zygotic
barriers to mating to have evolved.
