(7) Many proteins are chemically modified after the translation of the linear polypeptides. Examples of post-translational modifications include: A) glycosylation; B) phosphorylation; C) methylation; D) folding and disulfide bond formation; E) insertion of a prosthetic group (e.g. heme into hemoglobin). (8) The signal sequence that targets a protein out of a human cell (e.g. insulin) has the following characteristics: A) It is always located at the amino terminus of the protein and is cleaved off after the protein has been transported to the targeted location; B) It usually contains a stretch of 10-14 hydrophobic residues at the amino terminus; C) It can be located anywhere in the protein sequence; D) It always contains a stretch of sequence with 4-8 consecutive basic residues (Lys or Arg); E) It binds to a transcription factor protein for targeting.
