On Dec 31, 2019 the World Health Organization (WHO) recieved it's first communication from China describing the spread of a severe type of viral pneumonia. By January 10, 2020, the WHO received the genetic sequence of the virus and on January 13 a case in Thailand was the first reported outside China. On January 20, the first confirmed case in the United States was diagnosed in a patient in Snohomish County, WA and by January 30, 2020 the Director-General of the WHO declared the novel coronavirus outbreak "a public health emergency of international concern" (PHEIC), WHO's highest level of alarm. The COVID virus is able to bind and enter host cells through the viral "Spike" protein. This protein is also a target of most of the vaccines currently available. The sequence of this protein can be found in the protein databank here https://www.uniprot.org/uniprot/PODTC2#structure. There is a menu on the left of this page with a heading titled "structure." Find the secondary structure. Notice that there are both a-helices and b- strands. b-strand is another name for b-pleated sheet. What types of secondary structures are present in this protein?
