Consider the following equilibrium processes with associated constants at a given temperature: PbS(s) <--> Pb2+ (aq) + S² (aq) Ksp = 4.3 x 10-28 These are the acid dissociation constants for H₂S. H₂S(aq) <--> HS (aq) + H*(aq). Ka1 = 1.5 x 10-8 HS (aq) <--> S2 (aq) + H*(aq) Ka2= 3.80 x 10-11 In an acidic solution, such as acid mine tailings, one finds an increased amount of solubilized lead, as well as H₂S in the solution. a. What is the overall reaction when lead sulfide combines with acid (H+)? (4 points) b. What is the value of the equilibrium constant (K) for the combined reaction? (4 points) c. What will the concentration of Pb2+ be at pH=2.25 when all of these equilibria are taken into account? (4 points) d. Heavy metals are often found as sulfide compounds, which typically have very very low solubility. Explain why acid mine tailings are able to solubilize several normally insoluble heavy metals.
