The ingredients to make slime include a long polymer that is the
main component of glue – polyvinyl
acetate (PVA). In the process of making slime, the long chains of
the PVA get bonded together in a
process called crosslinking. This changes the texture of the
material. The amount of cross-linking (based
on the types and amounts of chemicals used) determines how stretchy
or stiff the resulting slime is.

Materials:
 White glue
 Glass stirring rod
 Beaker
 Graduated cylinder
 Baking soda
 Contact lens solution
 Water
 Measuring teaspoon
 Food coloring (optional)

Procedure:
1. Put 40 mL of white school glue in the small beaker. (You can use
the markings on the side of the
beaker even though we know they’re not super accurate.)
2. Using the graduated cylinder, measure 20 mL of water and add it
to the beaker with the glue.
3. Add ½ teaspoon of baking soda to the beaker with glue and the
water. Mix it all together with
the glass stirring rod.
4. Add food coloring to the mixture (optional).
5. Using the graduated cylinder, measure 6 mL of contact solution.
Add it to the mixture in the
beaker. Continue to mix with the stirring rod or use your hands to
knead the mixture together.
6. Write down some observations about the properties of the
slime.
7. Choose your own adventure! Repeat steps #1-6, either:
a. Using 25 mL of water (keeping all the other amounts the same)
or....
b. Using 1 teaspoons of baking soda and 10 mL of contact solution
(keeping all the other
amounts the same).

- Observations of your slime made with the original recipe:

- Which second recipe did you use?

- Observations of your slime made with your second recipe:

- Given the change in properties of the second slime, what do you
was different on the molecular
level between your first and second slime? Which do you think had
more crosslinking? Why?
