How many other structural isomers can you build for a 5-carbon hydrocarbon? Build and sketch the models of the different isomers. Other C-5 structural isomers: Sketches of models: Note (hopefully) that you had more isomers for the C-5 (pentane) system than you had for the C-4 (butane) system, and that there were no isomers for C-3 (propane). It turns out that there are nine C-7 alkanes, eighteen C-8 alkanes, and a staggering 4 billion C-30 alkanes! The increasing number of isomers for longer carbon chains is one of the reasons that the num- ber of organic compounds is so large. Some of these isomers have never been synthesized or isolated, though. Hydrocarbons (compounds which contain only C and H) may also have multiple bonds. This type of compound is called an unsaturated hydrocarbon, because it has less than the maximum number of hydrogen atoms that it can hold. Draw Lewis structures and build models for the compounds below. If your Lewis structure indicates a double bond (alkene family) or a triple bond (alkyne family), use a tetrahedral carbon atom and flexible white "bonds" in your atom kit to build the models.
