Experiment 6: Conservation of Linear Momentum In this lab, masses of two carts are taken. There are two photogates at two ends of the track to measure the velocities of two carts. In elastic collision, the two carts are at the center in the beginning at rest. They move opposite direction and pass-through photogates so that their velocities are measured. In the case of inelastic collision, however, one cart is at rest at the center of the track and another cart comes with certain velocity and collide with the cart at rest. The two cart sticks together and move together. Their common velocity is measured by another photogate. Following are the data provided to complete your work. Please note: momentum is p = m.v (kgm/s) Table 1: elastic collision. Mass of cart 1: 510 g; mass of cart 2 = 508 g.
