The properties of materials are largely controlled by their
microstructure and atomic structure.
a) Explain the distinction between microstructure and atomic
structure. (3 marks) Two of the categories of instrument we use to
studies these are microscope and diffractometers.
b) With reference to your answer to part a). describe how these
can solve microstructure and atomic structure. (3 marks) X-ray and
Electron diffraction both make use of the ‘Ewald Sphere
Construction’.
c) Prove that the Ewald Sphere Construction is equivalent to
Bragg’s Law. (2 marks) d) Why is the Ewald Sphere Construction so
useful for electron diffraction? (2 marks)
