Written response question 1 (Q1) Bromine is a diatomic element that is useful as a chemical reagent, and your goal is to synthesise bromine to sell to a client. Suppose you want to prepare elemental bromine from bromide using the permanganate ion as an oxidant. a) Calculate free-energy change (AG) for this redox reaction at 10°C, given: [MnO4] = 5 M and [Br] = 0.01 M. b) Based on the value of AG, is the redox reaction thermodynamically favoured? (Hint: is the Nernst equation needed?) Cathode: MnO4 (aq) Mn²+ (aq) E° = 1.51 V → Anode: Br (aq) → Br₂ (aq) E° = -1.07 V
